A look at how we can assess
teaching Teaching with technology offers some unique opportunities not just for teaching, but for thinking and learning about our teaching and our students' learning. Because incorporating technology in the classroom should always be driven by the educational needs of the students, and the pedagogical goals of the professor, we have the chance to begin by discussing, challenging and clarifying those needs and goals. Beyond that beginning, teaching with technology should always include research and re-evaluation of the ongoing process of teaching and learning. This is the foundation of the scholarship of teaching--treating what happens in our classrooms as a subject worthy of the same rigorous, intense, detailed study as we devote to our academic subjects. At BMCC, a group of faculty members have been involved with the Visible Knowledge Project (VKP), a five-year, four million dollar project, based at Georgetown University, aimed at improving the quality of college and university teaching through a focus on both student learning and faculty development in technology-enhanced environments. To get an idea of the kinds of projects that are possible, or to contact any of the VKP researchers to begin your own project, check the BMCC VKP homepage, and the electronic posters created by the VKP participants.
