There are
many people and publications looking at and talking about online
education. Some institutions, like Sloan-C, focus on programmatic
recommendations, like the
Five Pillars of Quality Online Education.
At other places, like Chico State University, some excellent work is
being done in looking at individual classes, and carefully assessing
the quality of teaching going on there. CSU's
Rubric for Online Learning
gives a good yardstick to measure your own online courses--whether
already running, or in development.
Whatever your
course, whatever your discipline, teaching online gives a unique
opportunity to examine your teaching--because at BMCC (and anywhere
that Distance Learning is a successful operation), the emphasis is
always and primarily on the teaching, rather than the technology.
So as you read
this list, try to think about what you add, or what you would
change, for your own class. This list is not meant to be
comprehensive, and certainly doesn't begin to replace a full DL
training--but as a starting point for discussion, here are Ten Top
Teaching Tips from BMCC DL faculty (click on each one to see a full
explanation).
