This
practice uses the same Reading Selection A, but a different
Reading Selection B and writing assignment. If you have already
done Practice 1, you do not need to print out the Gould essay again.
If you havent, please print out the long reading and take the
time (at least two hours, preferably a few days) to analyze
it using any or all of the techniques outlined in the tutorial or
learned in classes or workshops.
Reading Selection A
Stephen
Jay Gould, Sex, Drugs, and the Extinction of Dinosaurs
If you would like to take this practice under test conditions,
print out the second reading and the written assignment, get a dictionary,
and then give yourself two hours to read, plan and
write your essay:
Reading Selection B
John
Rader Platt, The Notebook as Motivation
Writing
Assignment
Analyze the writing assignment. Which part of the Gould essay are
you asked to focus on? What is the topic you are expected to discuss?
What is Platts perspective on the topic? Do you have any ideas
or feelings about the topic? Is there anything in your background
that you can use for the essay?
Write the essay in the remaining time.
Did you have enough time to read the Platt essay, plan, and write
your essay? Did you proofread your essay? Did you check to see whether
you fulfilled all the parts of the assignment?
If you would like to have a tutor look at your essay, you can take
it to the Writing Center (S500) or send it in below:
Put your essay aside for a day or two. Then look at the Task
1 Scoring Guide to see how well your essay satisfies the requirements
in each of the four categories.
