MIDTERM PAPER
The context:
Between 1870 and 1900, conquest
and expansion, first across the continental United States and then overseas in
the Caribbean and the Philippines, went hand-in-hand with the explosive growth
of a corporate economy. Both continental and overseas expansion came at the
expense of darker skinned peoples.
The assignment: Using the following assigned materials, write a five-page
essay exploring the connections between geographic expansion, racial oppression
and economic "progress" in late 19th century U.S. history.
--The lithograph American Progress (John Gast, 1872).
--The "Two Photos," before and after of students at the Carlyle Indian School,
1879
--The Pears Soap Ad (McClure's Magazine, 1899)
--The movie In the White Man's Image
--The movie Savage Acts
--The excerpts from speeches by Senator Albert J. Beveridge
In addition, as appropriate, draw on material from the assigned reading in the
Iron Horse v. Buffalo and Who Built America (as well as any of the documents we
used in computer lab exercises).
The midterm paper is due Wednesday, March 24.
