HIS 120/ BOROUGH OF MANHATTAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE/ PROF. FRIEDHEIM/ Fall 2002 MIDTERM PAPER.
In a 750 - 1,000 word paper compare the Atlantic passage of European indentured
servants and African slaves to the western hemisphere in the 17th and
18th centuries. Consider the various aspects of the passage: (1) the
events leading to embarkation, (2) the actual voyage, and (3) the events
surrounding disembarkation. Base your analysis on an examination of the
following primary sources: "Gottlieb Mittelberger, On the Misfortunes of Indentured Servants, 1754" Excerpts from Slave Narratives Edited by Steven Mintz (documents 1-9) You can also draw on relevant material
from the text, class handouts and any other primary and/or secondary sources you
find useful. In your opening thesis paragraph, describe
and explain -- in a sentence or two -- what you consider to be the main
similarities and differences between the Atlantic passages of slaves and
indentured servants. In the body of your essay (three to four
typewritten pages), elaborate on that description and explanation of
similarities and differences What conclusions do you draw? Be specific. Draw
on evidence and quote from assigned and relevant primary sources
to document your observations and explanations. Cite your sources. In a final paragraph, summarize your
conclusions and evidence. Due Wednesday, October 23rd |
