Beginning with the freshman cohort of Spring 2008, all BMCC students are required to take at least one Writing Intensive course to graduate.

Criteria for a WI course

At BMCC, the criteria for designating a course WI follow those suggested by a CUNY-wide WAC Task Force subcommittee in 1999. A writing-intensive course

  • is capped at 25 students;
  • incorporates frequent informal writing-to-learn activities to help students generate ideas and better engage with course reading and assignments;
  • includes at least 10-12 pages of formal writing with opportunities for revision, either as a series of short papers or as a longer project carried out in stages throughout the term;
  • awards a significant percentage (at least 40 percent, usually more) of the term grade for the writing components of the course.

How to become eligible to teach a WI section

To teach a capped WI section, you participate in a set of WI faculty development workshops that introduce a variety of low-stakes writing activities, illustrate effective design for formal assignments, and show how to respond usefully and efficiently to student writing. The next term, having revamped your syllabus to integrate writing, you implement what you've learned, partnered with a CUNY Writing Fellow if you wish.

Committing yourself to teach a WI course does not prohibit using multiple-choice or short-answer exams, which may be valid forms of motivation and assessment for certain topics or aspects of learning
