WAC and the CPE

The CUNY Proficiency Examination (CPE) – an academic literacy exam that community college students must pass to receive a diploma, and senior college students must pass to advance beyond 60 credits – was conceived at roughly the same time as the WAC initiative. While WAC is not designed solely as preparation for the CPE, it is reasonable to think that students are more likely to succeed on this very high-stakes exam if they have experience with writing in discipline courses and not simply in English composition.

For information about the exam, go to http://www.bmcc.cuny.edu/cpe, or contact BMCC's CPE Coordinator, Julia Butterfield, jbutterfield@bmcc.cuny.edu

The Writing Center, Director Julia Butterfield

The Writing Center helps BMCC students in all subject areas to develop confidence in themselves as writers while acquiring critical thinking skills and the habits of proofreading and conscientious revision.   The staff provides guidance in all aspects of the writing process, from understanding the assignment to generating ideas, drafting, using sources, revising, and recognizing errors in grammar and syntax.   The Center also offers CPE preparation and workshops.

The Writing Center is located in S500, at the back of the Learning Resource Center.   Hours:   Monday-Thursday, 10 am to 8 pm; Friday, 10 am to 5 pm; Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm.   Drop-in visits are welcome.   For information or a conference appointment, call 212-220-1384 or email writingcenter@bmcc.cuny.edu .
